Civil Defense of MS Issues Maximum Alert for Storms and Hail
Read Time: 12 minutes
The arrival of an extremely severe cold front of polar origin has lit the maximum warning signal throughout the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The state Civil Defense has issued emergency communiques warning of the imminent risk of severe storms, heavy hail, and very strong winds. The violent thermal contrast between the warm tropical air parked over the Midwest and the polar air mass coming from the south generated giant storm clouds.
Official meteorological forecasts indicate that wind gusts can easily exceed sixty kilometers per hour in several southern cities of the state. Tree falls on electrical wiring and roof damage to industrial warehouses are already being closely monitored by local public utility concessionaires. Maintenance engineering teams from the state electric power company have been placed on standby to make quick repairs to the electrical grids.

Analysis of the Cold Front and Climate Impact
This extreme weather phenomenon is driven by a strong extratropical cyclone that recently formed on the southern coast of the South American continent. Moisture coming from the Amazon basin was channeled directly into the central region of Brazil, feeding local instabilities continuously and severely. This dangerous combination of geographical factors resulted in a highly favorable environment for the rapid formation of dangerous supercell hailstorms.
